Pictures of a Sunken World is a series that investigates facets of the human condition in contemporary society. Where Ukiyo-e (translated as “pictures of a floating world”) sought to reflect the flourishing and bourgeoning social landscape of Japanese Edo Period, my body of work forebodes the decline of humanity in a personal, dystopic vision of the future.

My work has a subjective angle that fundamentally adopts a satirical undertone. In the prints, The Touch Screen Experience, Tinder Request for Pussy Pincode, Super Happy Family Fun Time and Oculus, I investigate interpersonal relationships and interactions in the modern age of rapid technological advancement. I am interested in the effect that technology has on the identity of the individual, and how it shapes one’s sense of reality and environment. These narratives seek to portray the isolative effect that modern day gadgets have on people.

An Exodus of Barren Women, Chocolate Cysts of the Ovary and Death of Human Sustenance, confront the theme of body horror and the idea of infertility as a cause for the decline of natural, human continuity. Death of John The Savage references the novel, Brave New World (Aldous Huxley) in which the suicide of the character, John The Savage in the utopian “New World” sounds the death knell of society and humanity.

In my practice, I constantly aim to revise and reinvent narrative techniques. In this series, I am interested in how themes of Dystopia, which are more prominently represented in literature and film, can similarly be portrayed in visual art to the same effect. I am interested in a tension that arises from using traditional techniques to portray contemporary concerns. Through the marriage of traditional medium with new media, I seek to create a science fiction-esque narrative that is at once unique and personable to the viewer.
